The hidden Gem of North Goa, the Arvalem Caves, also known as the Pandava Caves, are a mesmerizing testament to the state’s lesser known yet rich historical heritage.

Estimated to have been constructed around the 6th to 7th century, the Arvalem Caves showcase the elegance of early Indian rock cut architecture. Sculpted into laterite stone, the cave complex consists of five plain chambers.
Each chamber houses a Shiva Lingam, indicating it’s sacred purpose in Shaivite worship traditions of Hindu culture. The monolithic Shiva Lingam inside each chamber are carved from the same laterite as the surrounding rock, and one of those chamber is slightly larger, suggesting it may have served as the main sanctum or prayer hall.

According to legend, the five Pandavas from the Mahabharata took shelter in these caves during their period of exile and made the caves. The caves also called Pandava Caves which attracts pilgrims and enthusiasts intrigued by ancient Indian epics.
Another Myth behind the Arvalem Caves according to historians and archaeologists, that the caves may have had Buddhist origins. They described that designs and layout in the caves resemble early Buddhist vihara style architecture.
This theory is also supported by the presence of a large statue of Buddha in the vicinity, which established the possibility, the site to be a Buddhist sanctuary before transforming into a Shaivite place of worship.
Arvalem Water Falls Near Arvalem Caves
Just a few steps away from the caves, there is another spectacular view point of the stunning Arvalem Waterfalls. This 70 ft high water fall jumping down straight into a gentle pool below, offers a tranquil contrast to the loneliness of the caves.
During the monsoon, the greenery at it’s best along the surrounding landscape and the waterfalls become mightier at it’s fullest force. Tourists prefer to visit the caves and the waterfalls in Monsoon to enjoy the real beauty and vibrancy of the place.

How To Reach
By Road: From Panaji, the capital of Goa, drive to Sanquelim takes about an hour. for driving through the scenic inner roads of Goa taxis are available.
By Rail: The nearest railway station is Karmali and local cabs, auto-rickshaws are available at the station.
By Air: Goa International Airport in Dabolim is about 45 kilometers away. From there, you can easily get a pre-paid taxi or cab.
Best Time To Visit
The monsoon (June to September) offers the most spectacular views of natural abundance, greenery and waterfalls with mightier force. However, the dry months from November to February offer easier travel conditions.
