The Kailash Mansarovar Yatra which was suspended since 2020, due to Covid pandemic, now it’s showing hope when Ministry Of External Affairs (MEA) announced on 18th April 2025, that it is going to start this year and the date will be public very soon.

The Highlights Of Mansarovar Yatra

Mansarovar Lake located at the high of 4,600 m and Mt Kailash which is adjacent to the lake, is 6,638m high, both are significantly Hindu sacred place dedicated to Lord Shiva. The lake locally known as Mapam Yumtso, is a high altitude freshwater lake near Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR).

According to legend, Mt Kailash is the home of Lord Shiva, which is major sacred place in Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, and the Tibetan Bon religion. Thousands of devotees join this hard rocky and risky trekking to visit, at least once in a life time, Mt Kailash and take a dip in holy Mansarovar for dedication of surrender for their satisfaction to lord Shiva.

Before 2020, the Mansarovar Yatra organised by MEA for Indians between the months of June and September each year during 23 and 25 days. It was open for only Indian passport holders, who were medically sound and physically fit, checked before approval, and aged between 18 to 70 years.

Registrations and other details of Mansarovar Yatra would be announced by official very soon this year.

The Routs Of Mansarovar Yatra

There are 3 routs are available for Mansrovar Yatra from India.

 Lipulekh pass, at altitude of 5,115 m, an ancient rout between the Indian subcontinent and the Tibetan Plateau, frequented by traders, located between the trijunction of Uttarakhand, Nepal and Tibet. This route is the most direct way to get to Mansarovar from India, roughly 50 km from the border. But the rough terrain make this route entails roughly 200 km of hard trekking.

Secondly, Nathu La pass at an altitude of 4,310 m located between the border of Sikkim and Tibet. Another is Jelep La that have connected Sikkim and Tibet since ancient times, these two passes are in the same region.

The route to Mansarovar yatra from Nathu La is much longer around 1,500 km. But it is fully motorable and devotees can make it all the way to the lake without any trekking, from there Mt Kailash is just around 40 km trek. This route became operational in 2015.

There is another rout route through Nepal is also operated through private companies since 2023, when China reopened it’s border with Nepal. But visa and permit requirements, as well as high costs due to China imposed fees, so it is definitely costly option. Recently the chartered flights from Nepalgunj also has been started.

An aerial view of Mount Kailash is available when India also developing a Mount Kailash darshan from Dharchula, near Lipulekh, and also a rout will be made from Pithoragarh to Lipulekh, is on the way.

The Mansarovar Yatra was suspended due to 2020 Covid Pandemic and there after deterioration Of relation with china due to some geopolitical issues in border. Later the matter has been resolved and corelations with China improved, which result open for Indian devotees, the rout of Mansarovar Yatra.
