This event held every year in the village called Herobhanga in Canning dist. in West Bengal. It is an internal game between two villages and symbol of strength and power. After monsoon before the cultivation starts, motto of this games to make the land eligible for more crop.
The Process Of Moi Chara or Bull Race
The participants are not human, It is bulls or cows who takes part of the game. Bulls are trained through the year for the race. They used to tied with a big metal rod with a rack. The attached metal rod to push the lower portion of the rack in side the soil.
This process make the harder soil come out to become softer and muddy for bowing the seeds. It makes the field more fertile and ready to cultivate for the season. Three men are accompanied with a pair of Bulls.
When they started to run two men escaped and only one trainer hold the rope of two bulls and support them to the right direction. Bulls will be eliminate if they cross out of the track.
The pair first cross the finishing line will be winner. This competition held between two or more villages to show off their strength and position in the society. The winners of the league compete in the semi final and final to win the tournament.
The cows or bulls who are participant of the race are well maintained for only race. They are not allow to other work. They are trained daily by experienced trainers, care about their food and their well beings. Seasonal fruits and jaggery also included in their diet.
Moi Chara or Bull Race is Also famous In Kerala
Moi Chara is known as Bull Race in other parts of India and it is famous in it’s kind in Kerala. In Kerala post harvest festival Bull Race is famous as “Maramadi”. It is a relentless competition or sports among 300 pairs of Bulls.
Maramadi is an exceptional event of “Kakkoor Kaalavayal” which has a tradition of thousands of years. Bulls are reared tremendously well trained for this wild race. People from all over India gather on the event to watch.
Each pairs of bulls violently chased by three men and bulls are left for free mad run with three men till the finishing line. Bull race is organized on the paddy fields merged in 6 inches of water and mud.
No doubt of it that it is an exceptional competition which shows the strength of human against the beast force of bulls. The Bull race is a 100 miter long race in the muddy and watery field.
Moi Chara in Bengal
Bull race is very famous in Kerala which is every year a big attraction for local people as well as tourists also. But in Bengal Moi Chara is not so famous. Many people gather in this event every year.
But they have no convenience way or proper infrastructure to arrange for sitting there. Herobhanga district is just couple of hours from Kolkata and even any body want to stay there for two days there is no hotel or any other option.
Every year the event Moi Chara held in Herobhanga and almost 130 to 150 participants are gather for the competition but it is not known properly due to the lack of accommodation.
