The Victoria Memorial Hall is one of the Iconic Monument of Kolkata has opened for the public on 1921, which was laid foundation by then Prince of Wales, later he became King George V on January 4, 1906.
Victoria Memorial is not only a piece of architectural masterpiece, it is also the grand memorial of British Empress Queen Victoria, who died in January 1901.
The Victorian Era was 63 years of span, which was reign Queen Victoria in UK from 1837 to 1901. She was born at Kensington Palace in London on January 4th, 1819. She was only daughter of Edward, The Duke of Kent and son of George III.
Then Viceroy of India was Lord Curzon, who proposed to build this marvelous monument to honor of their beloved empress. A big mass gathering was arranged in Town Hall.
There Lord Curzon appealed to the Indian to raise funds for the building the grand memorial of queen Victoria. People of India raised the fund of one crore fifty Lakh almost and the building was made of that fund, only some part of the structure borne by British.
Before the Victoria Memorial was born the place was residency of Central Jail building. The jail was shifted to Alipore and the building demolished before the foundation of Victoria Memorial was laid.
Design of Victoria Memorial was inspired by Taj Mahal style. A big central dome surrounded by four smaller domes and chaatris of octagonal shape.
Top of central dome ornamented with a 16 feet tall magnificent fiery with big wings and a big long flute holding in mouth, The Angel of Victory. The significant of the statue is, It can move according to air direction.
It shows which direction the air is blowing. Surrounding the central dome the structures of sculptures are Art, Justice, Charity and architecture when north porch are surrounded the sculpture of Prudence, Motherhood and Learning.
Victoria Memorial Is Largest Museum In Kolkata Now
Victoria Memorial is now largest museum in Kolkata. It has 28,000 collections of arts, painting ,books, armors etc, including 25 galleries in the museum and most famous are Calcutta Gallery, Portrait Gallery, Royale Gallery, Sculpture Gallery and National Leaders Gallery.
Outside the Memorial surrounded a beautiful garden with decorated of four lakes, where people can sit beside the lake. The garden is decorated with statue of Queen Victoria, Charles Cornwallis, Arthur Wellesley and Rajendra Nath Mukherjee and many others.
The Victoria Memorial only once painted in black at the time of World War II, to camouflage and prevent it from Japanese Bomber target.
In the evening there is a famous light and Sound show held in the Victoria Memorial open air. This show called as “Pride and Glory– The Story of Calcutta” and it is a journey of recall the memories, about the glorious history and heritage of the city of joy, Kolkata.
The Show Duration 45 minutes. The Show in Bengali. 6.15pm to 7.00pm (October to February) and 6.45pm to 7.30pm (March to June )
The Show in English : 7.15pm to 8.00pm (Oct. to Feb.) and 7.45pm to 8.30pm (March to June).
Monday has no shows including National Holidays and July, August and September has also no shows because of Monsoon.
