Raja Subodh Mallick Palace — The Ruined Memory Of 140 Years old History

Situated on the road named Raja Subodh Mallick Square, in Kolkata. Raja Subodh Mallick Palace Is a Renowned historical place where Famous people like Rabindra Nath Tagore, Rishi Aurobindo Ghosh and other freedom Fighters visited several times.

History Of Raja Subodh Mallick Palace

Raja Subodh Mallick was born on 9th February 1879 in Pataldanga Vasu Mallick house. Later his father Prabodh Cahandra Vasu Mallick bought the land of Wellington Square in Kolkata and built the palace and it was more to known as Subodh Mallick Palace.

Raja Subodh Mallick was originally named Subodh Chandra Vasu Mallick but he was well known as Raja Subodh Mallick. Subodh Mallik was an Bengali Industrialist, Educationist and Nationalist. He was also famous for Indian Freedom Movement activist.

He was well educated, completed secondary from St. Xavier’s school, intermediate from Presidency Collage Kolkata. He got admitted in Trinity Collage Cambridge in 1900 in fine Arts.

He was founder of the famous society “Field And Academy” and all renowned Patriots, Government officers, Barristers and respected persons like Desh Bandhu Chittaranjan Das, Rabindra Nath Tagore, A Choudhury, were the members of the society.

When Anti-Government Movement was at it’s full pace, students also declared to leave Government colleges with the leadership of Sachindra Nath Basu, a student of City college.

Raja Subodh Mallick proposed to make a National College and on 1906 in a meeting of massive gathering he was presiding and declare his contribution of Rs 1 lac for the formation of National University which in due course converted to Jadavpur University.

Once, among ‘Indian Freedom Movement’ this building played a major role where many famous freedom fighters including Rabindra Nath Tagore, Bal Gangadhar Tilak, Chittaranjan Das had often visited this house.

Famous Rishi Aurobindo had stayed there to Raja Subodh Mallick as a guest on 1906 to 1908.  

This beautiful U shaped building is a magnificent architectural evidence which was build between 1883 to 1884 when he was only at 4 yrs of age. The house was declared Heritage in 1998.

But still it was neglected due to legal litigation, and the building was crumbling since then. No body their to bother about the history and heritage of a kind hearted person like Raja Subodh Mallick or nobody there to save the house from destruction.    

Thus memory of Raja Subodh Mallick was silently disappearing in the darkness of past.
